Default What's the benefit of 520 conversion?

I see lot's of people talking about it, but I am not sure that I understand the reasoning behind it. Is it just to drop a couple pounds?

A 520 chain is what I used to have on my Seca II, and I used to stretch that little thing out like there was no tomorrow...

The big deal isn't just that it's a few pounds but where the few pounds are. The rear sprocket is 100% unsprung weight -- the area of chain that's on the rear sprocket at any particular time is also unsprung. Unsprung weight (even an ounce) is the golden fleece of motorcycling. This allows for better flickability (handling) and quicker acceleration -- even with the same size sprockets. The chain is lighter also so that's less rotating mass to eat up HP when accelerating. The RK I put on the 1000RR is rated over 10,000 so you ain't gonna stretch it with less than 250 hp. Call up Limpy and he can set ya up. This ain't yo momma's chain

Hmmm... Interesting...

So if I went with the conversion and used a high quality 520 chain, I would in effect pick up a couple HP due to the current setup robbing less of it from the motor? My crank HP does not change obviously, but what I have on tap at the rear tire will?

OK, there is my next upgrade.
