What was your 1st street bike?

Was a F4i your First bike????

If it was, how was learning to ride on a very sporty street bike.

If it wasnt, what bike did you start on (street bikes)?

RE: What was your 1st street bike?

I learned on a 1989 CBR 600 about 3 months ago. I had never ridden a motorcycle of any kind before but found it really easy! The throttle was really smooth, so no lurching or anything like that. Great beginner bike.

Just got a 2001 F4I a few days ago. It's not quite as easy as the 1989 but I am having no problems (besides getting a little sore). The biggest difference as far as difficulty goes is that the throttle is tighter so going from zero to a small amount of gas takes more wrist pressure.

RE: What was your 1st street bike?

first bike was a suzuki gs500 but i never got it tagged. all of my friends would just blast it down some back roads to get a feel for a bike. it eventually got hit by a car with a confused little old lady behind the wheel. the bike ran out of gas on the side of the road at night. it was parked at least a foot in the grass on her right side but the headlight was aiming toward her. i guess she didnt know where the road was and she tried to pass it like normal. she was well off the road and just clobered it head on. messed it up real bad so that was the end of that. i dont think she should have been driving in the first place since she couldnt even tell where the pavement was! im just glad i wasnt sitting on it because i had to dive out of the way to escape![sm=yikesomg.gif]

RE: What was your 1st street bike?

F4i was/is my first motorcycle. I took the MSF and then went out and purchased me an '06 yellow F4i despite alot of people's advice from the forums to get a smaller bike. So far so good, covered almost 2000mi in a month with it and now I've been in europe for vacation for all of august and haven't ridden, i miss my baby :(

Bike's great and if you don't abuse its power, you should be fine. I also spent a couple days practicing with it in a parking lot before taking it out in traffic, so that's a must IMO with any new bike you get, whether you're experienced or not.

My first bike that was on the road (don't wanna call it a street bike) was a 1980 Honda XL185s enduro. Rode that bike for 2 yrs. in the dirt before I put it on the road when I was 17. Was riding the bike before I had a car licence.

Nighthawk 250

BTW, if a F4i was/is your first bike, how would you know how easy is it compared to any other bike?

A F4i is a twichy beast compared to 90% of the 250cc Standards.

Anyone can read my previous posts and see how I feel about a F4i as a first bike. It has more to do with Ego and less with brains. Pickup a Ninja 250R or 500R, ride it for a year or two, sell it for what you bought it for (VERY high resale value) and get a F4i or 600RR. You will have more fun and live longer.;)

RE: What was your 1st street bike?

The good ole Katana. 93. Would not have done anything different. It was the PERFECT bike for me to start on for a huge list of reasons.

cheap parts
enough, but not too much power
carb'd: easy to work on and gives you a little reaction time to think before a wreck
comfy as hell
easy as hell to ride/learn
weighs a ton; if you can take corners on that thing, the CBR was caaake.
the list goes on.

F4i was/is my first bike, and no problems here! I still love it to death, bought it back in Oct. 2004 having never ridden before, but took the MSF and then practiced in a parking lot until I got used to it somewhat. 2 days later started riding everyday and commuting daily.... almost 2 years and 62,000 miles later we're both still alive and kickin', and I'm still loving it! :D

my first street bike was a 1999 BMW R1100S. That was a sexy and solid bike. Too Heavy for such little power output.

2002 f4i is my 1st. and current street bike. I do like it but have not ridden any other street bike enough to give a fair comparison of potential likes and dislikes....

RE: What was your 1st street bike?

Just don't be like the tool in my neighborhood who just got a new Gixxer (600 or 750, can't tell yet). I know he was a new rider by the way he was jerking the throttle at low speed, and putting around the neighborhood trying to get a feel for it. I though that he had the right idea until on the second day I watched him do a speed run down my street in the early evening when kids are out playing. For reference I usually ride at 25 in 3rd gear when I come down my street (two blocks long) out of respect for my neighbors and the kids.

RE: What was your 1st street bike?

My first bike was the one I currently have. 4.5 years of riding it. My signature says it all.

AND BTW, everyone has opinions on what to buy and when. My buying an F4i right out of the gate had nothing to do with ego or anything else. It's what I wanted and what I really learned on and I've not had any accidents and obviously I'm still alive.
The power of this bike kept me sane and not doing things like riding beyond my ability.

woogie 08-26-2006 04:19 PM

RE: What was your 1st street bike?

I, like many others started on the F4i. I believe it totally depends on the rider as to whether or not a particular bike is dangerous. If you don't have the maturity and good sense to apply the throttle within your abilities and appropriate to traffic/road conditions, then you will probably kill yourself on/in just about any motorized vehicle.

One thing the smaller bikes have going for them is less weight. A low speed mistake can often be saved on a 250cc bike. Making a mistake on an F4i, you had better be fairly big and strong or it's going down - and it's gonna cost you when it does. That said, someone who is cautious and respectful of the bike, it's power and the numerous idiots on the road will likely be OK. That, however, excludes ALOT of people, maybe even most people.

My First was a 97 F3. I bought it because I wanted a CBR 600. I didnt even know other people that had bikes. i just wanted one because i liked bikes and i thought it would be fun to ride. So I guess it didnt have to do with my ego or anything else other than I wanted to have fun.

My first bike was a '94 F2. First thing I rode with a motor and two wheels. Once I got the hang of it I was hooked. A great bike to learn on and an all around bike. Someone stole it so I upgraded to the 2001 f4i.

RE: What was your 1st street bike?

Oh it was great fun learning how to ride a motorcycle on the way home from the dealership. I thought I was going to turn into oncoming traffic leaving the dealership and crash. Luckily I didn't. I have improved quite a bit and am a much better slow rider now. That's the hardest part I think is riding slow. Riding fast is kind of tough too though. I notice when I pass a car, and when I do it always seems I get up into triple digits, and I'm coming back into my lane the bike is really tough to change lanes. I really have to push and lean hard to get it over. I guess that's to be expected at 100mph though. I love my bike though, but I do kind of wish I got the RR as I hear it is a lot more aggressive and I like taking turns fast! =)

Are you counter steering? That makes such a huge difference.

You want to talk about funny. I finally got new road tires on my mountain bike. I havent ridden it since I was a teenager. I took it out for a spin down the block to make sure the bike comp I put on it worked. The first turn I naturally leaned/counter steered and almost ended up on my head. I forgot how fast a bicycle will turn.:D Can't wait to do some training on the mountain bike.

72 Norton 750 combat comando. As the officers said,repeatedly... how come you don't even have a permit, registration, tabs???? If Nortys didn't handle so well, I'd been dead. I had no idea how to ride street... so I rode it like my maico(open class mx'r) Wish I had kept that one. Clean and free, Ripp'n

My first bike was a 1983 Honda V45 Magna when I was 17 (18 yrs ago) had a blast on it wheelies, dragging the pegs, dropping it every other weekend, etc, it was so easy to ride and I had no fear or responsibilities back in those days.

RE: What was your 1st street bike?

My F4i is the first bike I owned, I did MSF then learned a little more on an 05 1000RR, then bought the F4i. There is no doubt that the F4i is an easy bike to ride, but without a doubt can be way to much for a beginner. It can be a good starter bike given the right rider on the right roads, I guess the same could be said about the big RR, motorcycle riding is 90% mental.

Another Katana here. Learned on a mid 80's honda 500 (don't remember what model). Went to Phoenix because I couldn't find a decent used one here. Picked up a '95 Katana 600, new tires, V&H exhaust, K&N, flushmount signals, an all around nice bike. I didn't even have it 6 months and got rear ended by a blue hair in a VW. Went over a year without a bike, then got a '96 Kawi ZX6E, bone stock. Have also had a '84 Honda Shawdow, and a '97 Gixxer 750. I think my F4i has nearly as much power as the Gixxer.
