how much "play" or movement should the throttle have before it actually adds fuel. Mine i can twist it a bit before it actually goes. Good or bad?...Bad! - how do i adjust it...Thanks

 

As far as how much play. A lot of that is personal preference. I like as little as possible, mine moves about 1/16" before engaging. To adjust, there are 2 tubes that come out in front of the throttle assy that bend 90 deg and have adjustment slides and a lock nut. Just loosten and adjust to what you want, just be carefull not to over adjust and have constant throttle. Real easy to figure out when you look at it if you are even the least bit mechanically inclined.

I don't like what you wrote. "It can twist a little bit before it actually goes." To me that doesn't sound that safe. I would like the throttle to be just as sensitive to touch as fire is. It needs to move when I want it to, not when it feels ready to. This could get stuck one day. You should have it checked. (Am I understanding you correctly?)

 

I have a little bit of play in my throttle too... not quite a quarter turn but almost. It hasn't affected my riding however, I just know that I need to crank it a bit more on a start. But that isn't all that bad... I would rather put in a little more effort from a stand still than have it too sensitive and over-rev the engine at a stop light.

It's almost like the clutch lever when you think about it, you can have some freeplay before it actually engages. I know that Honda recommends a maximum amount of play in the clutch but I have yet to see/read anything about play in the throttle. Guess I should look that up in my shop and owner's manual. It could probably use a little adjusting anyways, haven't done that since I bought her a few years back.

All the slop in the throttle is, is slack in the cable that comes in from the throttle body, goes around a cam, and back out to the throttle body. Doesn't create a safty hazard, just like having the cable brakes on a mountain bike, it is mostly personal preference as to how soon after you start to pull that they engage. Too tight will stretch out the cable causing it to be replaced sooner, and can also open up the throttle. I like as little slack as possible, don't get me wrong, but you need that tiny little 1/16th of an inch play at the outside of the grip to get the most out of the cable life and not rev your engine. Which equates to frog hairs at the cable itself. It is alot like adjusting your clutch on these bikes too. Sorry for rambling. Just woke up.

 

Having too much free play = more then the mfg suggests... I think about 2 or 3mm

Too little = the throttle engages when you turn the bars.

Just pick anywhere in-between there out of personal preference.
