i bought myself an undertail, but since i don't want to cut up my original
battery-box, i figured id look for a second hand one.
the only ones i found around my neck of the woods, are $120+ which is nuts
imho.
then i found one from a 99/00 F4. now it looks exactly the same as far as i
can tell, but wanted to make sure before i buy it. does anyone here know
for sure that the inner fender of the 99/00 model is the same as the F4i with
the banana seat ?

I'm not 100% sure that they are...but I am 98% sure you can interchange them, as long as you have a 04-06 tail on your bike.

if you need it, I have a very cheap 02 F4i undertail with a battery box. came out of a stuntbike, but if you just need the battery box end, you're good.

but your 2002 undertail/battery box wouldn't fit on my model. i don't have the split seat version.

i ordered the F4 inner fender now. im pretty sure it'll fit.
