Default Stolen Bike recovered after nearly 1 year

Greetings All:

My 2001 F4i was recovered 1 year after it was stolen (taken July 2010). I have the clean title so getting rid of it is an option. When my bike was stolen, I purchased a 2010 CBR600RR Leyla edition the same day, so I have something to ride. However, I'm considering using this bike to "learn" how to work on bikes. The thieves worked it over pretty good (see attached pic) but its not too bad looking considering. I took it to a mechanic yesterday and he said the bike would cost thousands to fix, but that is if he did the labor.

He suggested I put the bike on craigslist for parts, which is an option, but I wonder what the F4i community thinks about trying to fix it. If you have experience, tell me how difficult it would be to do this stuff. This is what I know about the condition:

**The mechanic did a visual precursory look, so didn't go inside the bike.
-My right brake lever is gone,
-weight on the right handle bar is gone, meaning the thieves went down on the right side.
-The ignition was busted and the rear lock box is busted.
-The wiring to a box under my seat (I believe its the ECM according to the manual) is severed in some spots but I can see where it connects.
Main seat missing
-front fork MAY be bent, this is what the mechanic said but he wasn't sure.
-inside of gas tank has rust, the thieves took the screws off so they could put gas in it.
-I bought new tires right before it was stolen, and the tires are still relatively good. The thieves were obviously not bikers so only the middle tread is down, and not all the way. They did some burnouts
-can't start it now obviously because ignition is broke **

So, what do you all say? Try for it? Or chuck it? I would buy used parts off ebay and try to do the work myself or ask friends to help. Heck, if you're in the DC area (I live in Alexandria), feel free to come over and help to learn bikes with me or pass on some knowledge. The good part is, we can't mess it up any more than it already is. Please let me know your opinions.

I have a complete manual (no tools at all but willing to invest) and curiosity.

Totally fixable and worth the time/money. If you do it right it won't cost much at all. Most of the stuff you are talking abut is very basic and should be within your ability. You could part it out, but that takes a lot of time and effort as well, probably moreso than it will take to restore it.

+1. The biggest challenge will be the wiring. The rest is cake, just need to get yourself the parts.

Congrats on getting it back!!! That rarely happens. I had a bike stolen, so I know that feeling. I never got mine back though.

Well, if it were mine, I would get it back together in roadworthy fashion & use it either as a track bike or a spare bike. Then again, I work on my bikes, so its not an unknown for me to do repairs. If the engine is strong, the frame straight, & you're handy w/ tools & are patient, I say go for it! I don't see anything in your description that can't be overcome for too much cost if you do the work yourself & buy replacement parts at a reasonable price.

IMO, it would be good to have the bike back on the road. It deserves that much after what its been through! ;-)

Good luck.

If you go to your local radio shack you can get little 3M scotch lock seamless butt connectors. They are perfect for wires which have been cut like that, you just strip a bit off each end and crimp them in. Very simple, looks fairly clean, but time consuming.

Merging threads is a lot harder than deleting them... especially when my ISP is screwing up

I feel your pain my friend. I have U-Verse and it is nothing short of a miracle when they aren't screwing up! The thread looks alright now but for a while there is was a bit disjointed! lol
