Default Speedometer way off

So yesterday, I took off my right side fairing so that I could sand and paint it. I did that, and put it back on this afternoon.

The bike was not started, moved, or messed with in any way other than taking the right fairing off and putting it back on.

Ever since that, the speedometer has been reading way off. Going around 20mph in my neighborhood, it was reading 70mph. Going about 40mph on a side road, it read 90-100mph. I took it up to about 80mph on another road after that, and it read 140mph. Pulling up to a stop at a stoplight, it reads about 25mph when I'm going about 5mph, then once I stop it quickly goes back to 0mph.

Does anyone know what this problem could be? Literally nothing has been touched or messed with to my knowledge. My first thought was speed sensor, so I tried looking it up online, and it appeared there was one around the gas tank/front seat area. I looked at it with the bike still intact, and it seemed to be fine and not loose.

Before I start tearing my bike apart trying to figure this out, I wanted to see if there was any easier way to do this. I don't see any reason why any sort of sensor would be messed up, the bike was not messed with at all.

damnit schira got to it before i could. sounds like it's in kph.
BUT if it's not, then it could be a faulty speed sensor. I have a faulty speed sensor and my speedo works at startup, then after maybe 5 minutes of riding it shuts off and stays at 0mph, and my mileage doesn't go up (whoohooo!).

However, you're is a lot worse than mine because since the bike thinks you're going 100+ a lot, your mileage is gonna rack up like crazy when it reality, you only went a short distance. Gonna hurt you in the long run when you decide to sell the bike and try to tell the buyer "oh yeah, I know it says 40,000 miles but it's actually around 20,000 cuz I had a bad speedo"

Nah it's not the kph/mph thing. It's way more off than that - it reads 25mph when I'm just about to stop, at about 5mph.

It must be the speed sensor. I'll have to check it out.

start with the fairing, take it back off and see if there is anything in that vacinity that may havea loose connection, or pinched or grounded wire.
