Saw this while searching for a cheap alternative
the guy said it was sellys allclear sealant. It looks like a clear silicone caulk for windows and doors, pretty cheap and looks good to me. I don't think it would be too hard to remove if you didn't like it. This is the page I found it on Stompgrip Traction Pads - Cornering Forum, about halfway down the page Jason Woods posted the info in a couple posts.

Cheap Tank Grip
I've been researching this too... I like the caulk idea! I wonder if it would peel though at a crucial moment?
Here's what I think---
I may try "Hooligan grips"!
Recycled rubber sheet (anti-skid) supposed to be like tires...slight texture.
Recycled Rubber, 1/4 In Thick, 12x12 In - Rubber Sheets and Strips - Rubber - 10U475 : Grainger Industrial Supply
$6.44 for both sides
PC7 Epoxy to glue on. Epoxy, High Viscosity, Gray, 2 Oz Package - Epoxy - Glues and Cements - 4AUV4 : Grainger Industrial Supply $5.79.
Total cost for me is about $15. (Grainger here in town).
This however is permanent. What do you guys think?
