Default Rich vs. Lean

Any chance there's a knowledgeable rider out there that clear up this confusing enigma??? In my mind rich means too much fuel being pumped in. Lean means too much air being pumped in. I have an 2002 F4i. K & N filter, Hakced off Titanium slip on. I'm thinking the bike should be running lean. Yet the bike back fires when entering a corner as if it's getting too much fuel.It also smells real intense like exhaust or fuel when running at idle. Suggestions???
Also, the Poweer commander map I've seen for these mods shows negative (-) values at almost all RPM's. Which tells me they are cutting down the gas input.

Lean will backfire and possibly smell like fuel as well because your getting too much air and the gas could possibly not be burning up because its the wrong mixture. You shouldnt have a problem with a slip on and k&n though so i dont see why it should be runing lean.

Rich is too much fuel coming in, either a clogged air filter or a stuck injector are common causes.

IMHO, slip-on and K&N may cause a lean condition.
