I think a lot of PPL see riding gear as a fashion statement and they do it because "everybody else is doing it". They don't really consider the safety implications. I see guys all the time on Sportbikes geared up to the hilt, with chick on the back with shorts a tube top and some knee high socks. It's all about being cool
Blackdog: Ever though of custom leathers for your kid? Or how about a pocket rocket? The ones from Pepboys aren't that fast and are a good learning tool IMHO.

I have thought about it, but I have to get him to ride his bike without training wheels.
I'll probably get him a fiddy when he is old enough to reach all the controls. Falling on dirt is a whole lot easier than on tarmac. Barnacle Bills is pretty close, so when he is old enough I may call them up and see about a custom suit for him. Sure wouldn't take much leather.
