the hugger looks fine, does it actually serve a purpose or is it pretty much cosmetic.

 

Purpose of the hugger is to keep the underside/undertail/shock clean

Most of them have a chain guard built in too, so it replaces the factory chain guard as well

If you look closely & notice it also removes the 2 aluminum factory rear brake line brackets & covers the rear brake line too

I got it for function mainly, but it does look good too.
