Default pls help identify this part

2006 F4i

I removed the rear cowl to work on the rear signal lights. When I removed the cowl, a metal piece fell onto the ground. I believe it came from the right (brake) side. I incorrectly assumed at the time it would be easy to "put back" when I was done with working on the lights, but I can't quite figure out where it should go or even what purpose it has. The fact that it is threaded is even more confusing to me since the one bolt I removed on that side to remove the fairing isn't long enough to reach the part. I did recently buy the bike used, so I'm not sure what surprises I'm in store for.

I tried identifying it with the help of the diagrams on partzilla, but was unsuccessful.

Thank you for any help.
