Default please help identify this part

2006 F4i

I removed the rear cowl to work on the rear signal lights. When I removed the cowl, a metal piece fell onto the ground, I believe it came from the right (brake) side. I like to think I'm somewhat mechanically inclined, but I can't figure out 1) where this thing is supposed to fit; 2) what its purpose is.

The fact that it's threaded makes things even more confusing to me, since the bolt I removed on that side to remove the rear cowl isn't long enough to reach any additional hardware.

I looked on partzilla, but was unable to locate this piece on the diagrams there.

Thank you for the help.

It is part of the latching system. I believe it will cover the actual hook part on the bike that latches to the seat.

Well said - absolutely the rear-seat latch.

Thank you both!!

I bought it used. I'm not sure how many previous owners it had, but some things are well in order (engine, pipe, power commander, air filter, fairings). When I took off the seat to work on the lights and wiring, I was met with quite the pile of "spaghetti" wiring and an opportunity for improved cable management. The "seat catch hook" that fell off... must've just been hanging out since I didn't unbolt that or even touch it. Should be simple enough to get back to OEM now that I know what needs to be done thanks to your input.

Thanks again!
