Over heated
So I was out for a nice ride after work on the first 80+deg day of the year(today). I was doin good until I looked down and temp was 227. Thinkin maybe I've just been a little hard on her on the strip with the high RPM's I wasn't paniced. I was stopped at a light and temp started creepin up higher and higher. When the temp got to 238 I started to worry. The light turned green and since I was movin temp went down a bit. I thought maybe I had blown the fan fuse. When I got off to look I could hear a noise like the fan was in a bind. When I reached in to try and spin it it was loose and wobbley. The fan motor is shot, bearing fried. The other wierd thing I noticed was a goo that appeared on the fairing right by the kickstand. It has at least 250 miles since I last lubed chain using chain wax. This was a very thick greasy substance that had the consistancy of tar that wasdrippin out from behind the front sprocket cover. Has anyone else had that tarry crap show up on the lower fairing by the kickstand. Any help would be appreciated, since I will be tearing it all apart to change fan.[:@][:@]

RE: Over heated
i had chain oil drip from the sprocket cover but not tar. it was a bit grimmy but thats because it picked up a lot of dirt from the road.
as for the fan, that a major issue. first make use that your fan is connected well to the harness. some times the connections get loose and the fan work intermittently and it can give off an impression that it is working sluggish. if you think that the magnetic bearing is messed up then try to get that repaired. keep in mind on our bikes from 240f+ you will begin to wear out your motor and valve exessively.( but thats after couple of minutes)
good luck

RE: Over heated
speaking of heating problems. my bike (now weather is getting warm). get to ~222 and the fan takes it down to 218. someone (10r rider) said i should shut the bike off when it gets to 220. i figure honda has the switch on at 218-220 then it should be fine. It always cools down.
so my question is, what IS The shut down temp range?

my bike goes up to 245 sometimes. super scary. I just replaced the radiator and redid the coolant and it still overheats like crazy!!! I'm not running the bike hard or anything. I never go above 6000 RPM. Anyone know what I can do to fix it?

within 230 you're fine on the bike guys! don't listen to guys who run other bikes.
as for the tar stuff...take off your sprocket cover and you'll see that over months, etc. the cover has caught a lot of chain fling and it was that with dirt that you see as tar dripping out of the sprocket cover.
ddaren...your t-stat is most likely not opening up or youhave air in the system and need to burp it some more.if you can get in there, run without it and see if your bike ever overheats again.
