Manual cam chain tensioner ?!?!!

RE: Manual cam chain tensioner ?!?!!
It's not the cam chain making the noise, it's the tip of the CCT that's loose and rattles. Stake the pin, and the tip no longer rattles, problem fixed. The shop manager at the local dealer here told me they quit replacing them, and started fixing the existing ones, because the replacement will do the same thing. He's done about 35 of them with no problems.

check the posts...i did bash you for your attitude but i did not jump all over you at all as you claimed. just look way up in this thread. i merely stated that there is no slop in the chain with the OG cctl on there, although noisy. stepping on toes...read up top and see who's the big foot.
not a mechanic or an engineer by trade. i don't work for honda R&D. my friend does work for Honda parts department, but irrelevant.
stay on topic, i didn't say anything about airplanes and knowing how they work. i don't fix planes for a living so it doesn't really apply to me nor could i care any less about what you do. knowledge is knowledge and with experience comes knowlege, as with education...but the two enhance one other and thus should not be separated.
no, you're not an @$$ for not agreeing with me, you're just an @$$ because of your attitude. i'm sure i'm not the first one to say this to you though. have you opened up the engine like i suggested to look at it for yourself? actually get hands on with this CCTL thing? i have...and those are my conclusions, as well as others who have gone in there and assessed the situation. let's see...one's an NPDES compliance specialist, the other is a machinist, the other is...not sure what he does...but we all came to the same conclusion.
as far as the cam chain being tight enough without the CCTL...where did you read that? i surely didn't post that. the post merely says that it's pretty tight without the CCTL...check your facts bro.
now...as for the proof...i told you already...open up the engine and take a look for yourself! bring up the question in another cbr forum...i'm sure you'll hit the right one if you do a search for it...and have a discussion there. i can't post the link on here.
what proof is better than that? open the sucker up and check for yourself. no second hand information from someone else, no misinterpretation, etc...just you and the machine.

RE: Manual cam chain tensioner ?!?!!
I think, and this is ONLY my opinion, that eventually there would be an abnormal amount of cam chain and gear wear. It is possible that it could take 15-40 thousand miles because NO two parts are exactly the same and no two riders ride alike. I do know for a fact that if you let 2 pieces of metal come into contact for long enough that the only result is wear and EVENTUAL failure. A visual inspection will not always tell you the full story about a situation.
Sorry for the attitude everyone....mad issues with kids mom for the last two weeks!!!

hey t,
so you're saying that the stocker will be giving too much tension causing more cam chain and gear wear?
we theorize that this would happen with the APE instead because there is no 'set' tension, it's just the installer and what he/she feels is tight.
check this out...what causes the rattle is the pin moving within the cctl. it's still giving the same tension as it was designed to do, just that the dowel is loose. by doing the mod to the stocker, you just prevent the pin from moving back and forth, but not forward and backward.
did you install your ape yet? if so, take a look at the stocker and you'll see what's up with them dudes that get paid tons of bling and f it all up...

RE: Manual cam chain tensioner ?!?!!
you have to wheel and deal with them. the service dude i took my bike in for a valve adjustment was real cool, this was like 2 years ago though...he replaced it free of charge after talking to the regional rep. this is without warranty!
if you're under warranty, have them drop in a new one and mod your old one.

RE: Manual cam chain tensioner ?!?!!
I talked to the place where I got mine and the guy said he would be happy to replace it but he reccomended the APE since the F4i cctl is a recurring problem. I did take it to Bob's Honda in Memphis and they gave me the run around and told me that their SUPER MOTO GURU said that the noise was fairing rattle. This was when my bike had 3400 miles on it an had NOT been run hard AT ALL. I got mine in Chattanooga TN at Southern Honda for $6949 before ttl. Those guys are willing to help in ANY way that they can.
