know problems with f4i?
ORIGINAL: kittswife
I've got a 2001 F4i and I just replaced the cam chain tensioner with a factory automatic one, mainly because the automatic one was in stock and the manual one would have had to be ordered.I didn't want to wait for it. You'll know it needs to be replaced because you'll hear a loud rattling around 4-8RPM that's ungodly annoying. Not hard to install, the hardest part was the angle you have work at to get the old one out. Take the fairing off, lift up the gas tank and it's down behind the frame. But be careful not to remove the little t-lock looking thing in the end of it until it's installed, if you do, it will uncoil the spring and you'll have to dis-assemble it and re-coil it manually, which is a bitch! Learned by mistake.

Thanks for all the help guys. I've seen posts regarding this cct but didn't quite understand what it was or what to look for. I'll read that guide you mentioned up top.
Hopefully I will shortly be amongst the ranks of you f4i owners!

What they said. My bike has 16k on it and the cam chain tensioner rattles. It's not noticeable while you're cruising, but it really gets loud about 6-8k rpm. From what i've read and been told it's not a serious problem and you only have to replace/repair it if it annoys you enough to do so. I've kind of gotten used to it, but would like to get it repaired eventually.
You really can't go wrong with this bike. They are great fun and very reliable, overall. And the fuel injection makes winterizing and every day operation a breeze. It's the best bike for the price, imo. Congrats and hope you find your bike.

These bikes are absolutely bulletproof when properly maintained. hell even when they're improperly maintained, chances are they'll keep on going!
CCTL, sometimes a Regulator/Rectifier (though not as much as F2's or F3's) and that's pretty much it.
