no it's not a pain in the ****.
you just have to remove the ram air covers for more room.
then unplug the bulb, pull out rubber harness and then slide clip, remove bulb.
the bulb sits on a plastic connector piece, pull that off cause you need to reuse it.
don't touch the new bulb's glass...

i just put new headlights in last night, no biggie at all
all you need is a 3/16 (i believe) allen wrench, and about 10 minutes
you have to take the flat black colored cover off the bike, its on the side of the gas tank area, there is on allen screw up at the front of the piece and on that screws into the tank.
there are about 3 to 4 push clips that you need to pop out to get the piece out, once its out, unplug the headlight, take the rubber water seal off, unclip the little spring, pull headlight out
separate headlight piece put new bulb in, and reverse steps to put everything back together. its not hard, i did both headlights in no time.

I did my buddies without removing ANY covers. Just know what you are doing. And as Tahoe said...DO NOT TOUCH THE GLASS OF THE LAMP!!!!!

Just take the connector off, peel back the rubber seal, and there is a metal holding clip on a "hinge". Remove one side and it will lift up like a gate. Insert new lamp, push gate down, push rubber back, apply connector and you're golden

Off subject but had to do it!

Hey matt_m427 I must commend you on the great looking bike. Just upgraded my 03 to Repsol last month.

Draconius is exactly right... I just installed a whole new headlight assembly on my '01 after a broken lens incident, and the bulb replacement was the easiest part.

not to sound like an ***, but our bikes use all metric measurements. you should try to use metric tools for the bolts to lessen the chance of stripping anything. with the normal fairing bolts you are talking about, they use a 5mm allen wrench. just thought id let you know
