This issue likely the VSS Speed Sensor which has picked up some debris. I have the exact issue. Local Honda shop wanted $170 to take it out but I'm going to do it myself.

MitchA, does replacing (or cleaning?) the VSS speed sensor solve both the fuel injector light and speedo turning off problem?

An update on the rest:

I'm a bit of a gear head in the auto world, so i have some friends that are constantly working on bikes. I think I'm going to get one of them to come with me to assess the condition of this bike, and then if it looks ok try and fix everything that is wrong myself. If anyone has any other thoughts about the VSS Speed Sensor or anything else I'd be happy to listen!
