I always having a bunch of individual leds would be sweet but never could figure out how to make it work right.
Make what work right? the coloring of the indicator?
I got datatool digital gear indicator to work sweet deal.

I had my bike shop install an Acumen gear indicator (gear-indicator.com); $149 direct, or perhaps cheaper on e-bay. It works very well (as long as you're rolling), and while I certainly could have lived without it, there are occasions where it's nice to know what gear I'm in at a glance. I bought a little brushed aluminum custom bezel for it, and it really mounted up nice. If you're willing to spend the money, I'd recommend it. The new Suzukis have gear indicators as standard equipment.
