Default FI Light?

I have a 2001 F4i and ever since I have had it about four months now the red FI light comes on every time I start the bike. The bike rides fine, the only problem I have is crappy gas mileage. Is it normal for this light to be on all the time or does it mean something is wrong?

No, its not normal. The light is indicating that there is some sort of fault or malfunction in the fuel injection system. Could be something major; could be something very minor. As I understand it, that light is comparable to the 'MIL' light in a car and is just an indication that something in the fuel injection/ignition system (be it a functional part or a sensor) is not working properly. Should probably get it checked out. But if, for instance, the engine is running very lean that is bad and you will want to fix it.

crappy mileage indicates a rich condition -- can be confirmed by abnormal quantities of soot on exhaust. My guess would be something simple like a hose not connected to the IAP or PAIR or a sensor that isn't fully plugged in.

Duh, I forgot the best part ... someone on here owns a manual for your bike and can tell you how to retrieve the error code. That'll pinpoint the problem and save you mondo time. Try PM'ing Limpy -- he got's a shop in Cali and could prolly look up the procedure for ya.

Quick update, I started to tear apart my bike to see why the FI light is on and I found one of the sensors was unplugged. Plugged in back in and no more light. From what I have been told the FI sensor tells the computer how much fuel to give the bike, so this should fix my gas mileage problem.

This light is supposed to come on when you flip that red switch to start the bike right? It comes on for like 3 seconds while it sounds like the fuel pump is getting some in the lines

Ya, all your lights an guages are sposed to do a self-diagnostic when you turn the power on. If everything is o.k. then they turn off in a few secs.
