Going to school and back, I commute about 95 mi each day. The day before, I got throttle happy and was disappointed when I only got 32mi to the gal (8k-10k rpm [95-100 mi/hr]). Today, I practiced self-restraint and got 47mi per gal (6k-7k rpm [80-90 mi/hr]). My speedometer is kinda off...i heard that it is true with all bikes... so i can only really trust my rpm reading.

What do you guys get? What lv octane do you use? 87 for me.

 

That seems about right. I use 91 octane and get around 47 mpg if I "use restraint." the best i've ever got was about 55 I think, but it was a lot of down hill riding. You can get a Power Commander and set it low so less gas will be used.

 

93, 35-45 depending on how I ride.

I have an air filter and un-tuned Power Commander, though, which doesn't help things.

 

87 and 42 average.
For best mpg you got to keep the rpm under 5000.

I use 93 octane and I have gotten 55 miles to the gallon and as low as 30 mpg.

More rpms= bad mpg. Drive like Miss Daisy and get great gas mileage.

Ride your bike and have fun and you will pay for it at the pump.
93 octane gas is 1.99 per gallon in Nebraska, so if you compare it to filling my Expedition, it costs nothing to ride my bike.

 

When the last time I rode (when I purchased the bike), I was getting like 30 MPG, but that could be because my bike is just out of tune for just sitting so much, even with new fluids. I'm sure the shop only used 87 when they filled it up for me, but because I was so close to the winter and when it was ready for storage, I filled it up with Sunoco's 94 to stay in the tank while sitting.

I typically ride keeping the RPM's under 7000. I shift at like 4000. I know that is riding kind of soft, but there is not much I can do on streets cluttered with smog emitting 4 wheeled gas-guzzling vehicles (of which I own one too, lol).

I probably will just use mid-grade gas when I ride this season just to be in-between the highest and lowest, although the manual lists that 86 is the minimum to ride using.

well if you consider to owners manual to be some kind of discourse from the engineers than you have. yeah. all my friends get on my case pretty bad about using 87. it's all good.

 

F4i's are designed for 87. you can get 'cheap' 87 ie high water/sulfate content that leaves deposites and doesn't burn clean and you can also get higher quality fuels that may include caustic oxidizers yet still have an 87 octane rating. the octane has nothing to do with performance boosting it's a measurement of how easily the fuel evaporates and what it's flash point is.
