Default F4i fuel problem - HELP

Just got back from four outstanding days riding in the NC mountains! Only problem is that the wifes '01 F4i is runing waaaaaay rich. This just all of a sudden started during a ride. She was burning a minimum of a third more fuel than my '04 ZZR600. We first started noticing it because it would die at an intersection when she would come to a stop. Thought, humm, adjust the idle a little higher which helped with the stalling but starting the bike takes a little work and you smell raw gas but nothing is leaking out the bottom on the ground. Here are the details - '01 F4i with 2,300 miles on it. All stock, warehouse stored, premium gas. Any ideas????

Thanks for the feedback and anyone who has added the PowerCommander with USB, post up how you like it.

I own a manufacturing business and have 10,000 sq ft building to store it there (and ride it around in on rainy days). It's ridden all the time, so, it could not be from sitting around. Oh well, guess it's off to the dreaded dealership on Monday!

I run the 87 octane in mine because everytime I put the higher stuff in, it runs rich. The guy I bought it from told me that and I tried it for myself and he was right. But mine has almost 12000 miles on it and it does some weird stuff with the fi every once in a while. I'm fixing to test mine and see what I can find out. I would run a fi test and see if there are any error codes. Just a place to start.

there is no need to run anything greater than 87 octane. you are just wasting your money.

Hey diver will you please let us know what has happened when you get you bike repaired. I have this exact same problem. I have a bunch of the typical mods including a pcIII usb. the problem I am getting is an all around rich cond. mainly at idle and any constant throtle position. I believe from what I hav eread that it is the iat sensor( runs great when its cold..but still rich at constant throtle). Cold here is like 60 deg. f......... AnYoNe??? BTW where is the iat on an 01 f4i. Oh yeah I have been reading posts here for a few months now and would like to say Hello to all.

Well got the bike back today and here is the poop!

Seems the F4i's have a little issue sometimes with the auto choke. Seems if you change altitudes or temps it can sometimes cause the choke to stay closed longer than it should. No big deal you say except that it starts to foul the plugs. Intelligent little computer thingy says, "hey, a plug is fouled so we should shut the ignition off to that cylinder". No big deal you say except it does not turn of the injector and now it's dumping raw gas into the cylinder. Which by the way settles where? - in your crank case! Bottom line came to this - Plugs had to be replaced ($18.75 per plug) and the oil/filter changed because it was 1/3 overfilled with gas - of which none of the $247 was covered by the warranty!

Mechanic hinted on the side that you should stay away from any bike that does not have a manual choke. Looks like I'll be looking for a 600 RR.
