The cheap fix isn't any worse than the APE, in my opinion. I did replace mine with an OEM and in less than 10,000 miles the noise came back so I've learned to live with it. Some have reported success with the latest OEM's saying the noise never came back.

My only problem with the cheap fix and with the APE as well, is that I don't trust myself enough to know what is the perfect tension. I trust the Honda engineers over my own ignorance.

I'm a risk taker. As of right now I get a tiny rattle right at 3k but it's hardly noticeable. I'll play with it a little more this weekend.

It's your bike. My bike is pampered enough, she'll prolly be getting an OEM later in the summer. Ororo would run me down if I didn't try to put an APE manual in her at the least.

ive got this "ghetto rig" fix, and it works great for me. It sounds like the screw you put in is too tight maybe? Usually if its too tight it will sound very worse, and make the noise all the time cause it actually retracts the lifter from the tension it should be. If it only does it sometimes, then it may be too loose. This mod works great for me! Ive been through 3 cct's in 4000 miles...so ovbiously something different has to be done.(replaced cam chain, lifter piece inside already too...)

I think i may be having the same problem. Mine 02 F4i rattles at around 45-55k RPM. Some days (rarely) it doesnt rattle at all. But most days yes. If i where to take it to a shop how much do you think it would cost to get the CCT chain changed out?

i still don't like just tightening it until it quits rattling

it's best to check the slack on the cam chain between the intake and exhaust sprockets whenever you adjust it manually

if you start off too loose with an ape or this bolt fix thing you could jump teeth and cause your pistons to impact your valves

I tuned my APE 3-4 times till i got it PERFECT. This is without taking apart the motor or valve cover. The simplest way to go. no noise, no buzz or anything except the purrrrrr of a honda. And it's been like that since last summer. Running better then she ever has.

Seeing threads like this is why buying used vehicles is a scary thing. You do realize your ghetto rigging a rocket right? Not the kind of thing to play around with.
