Cool CBR 600 F4i 2002 Nazzuri Azzurro Rossi Edition *Fuel tank issue*

Hi All,

New member here - I have just bought a "barn find" 2002 Nazzuri Azzurro Rossi Edition CBR 600. It had unfortunately laid dormant for over 5 years with petrol in the tank and this has been my main problem...

I have replaced tyres, battery, fuel pump, gaskets etc etc but I fear the fuel tank is beyond repair. It was caked in rust inside and this has also damaged the fuel pump hence getting a new one.

I cannot find another fuel tank for this bike anywhere online so replacing it like for like does not seem to be an option - I have cleaned the inside of the tank with rust cleaner and vinegar but cannot get all the bits out. I guess I could have the tank dipped, cleaned and sealed but I think I would need it repainting afterwards and its a colour code I don't think is made anymore + has Rossi signature on the tank etc so not just a case of simple repainting?

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement tank for this model?
Does anyone have any advice how to get the tank back to its best by painting etc?

Any advice, tips and recommendations welcome!

Cheers

Jaykayree

I'm thinking you're not in the US. That model was not sold here. Doing research online, it seems like the color code is Y163.

Thanks so much - I found two colour codes Y163 and Y163p but do not know the difference? I'm UK based actually - apologies.

It might sound a bit simplistic but had a similar problem with a CB500 (stood for 13 years) and ended up blasting it with a power washer to get the majority of the crap out of it and then an extra in-line filter (not sure it would work on an injected engine tho) I have also heard very good reports on using POR 15 to seal the tank which should leave you not needing to get the tank painted.

Petrol, tyres, yeah it was kinda a give away huh? lol
If the outside of the tank is as unique as you say and reproducing it isn't an option, then you need to get the inside clean. Long wire brushes, power washers, kids hands with sand paper, whatever it takes to save it.
