Good idea on just changing the cctl, the chain should be fine

with only 16k. I changed mine 3k ago with the updated version,

still nice and quiet.

Thumbs down Bad news

I finally got the Cctl on and started the bike hoping to hear nothing but a purrr.. well...there's another sound... It sounds either the chain, or valves. I have 16k on the bike so it is do for a valve adjustment. Or the cctl didnt do it's job once stop tool was pulled out. The bike was turned to TDC as well. Although your suppose to turn clockwise, but i had to turn it backwards (counter clockwise) a tad to line it up. Hoping that didnt harm anything. Very disappointed. Any ideas?

If the engine has to be at TDC for the number 1 piston, that means that the number one piston is going to be in it's full compression state. It will be as high as it can be in the block and all the valves for that cylinder will be closed tight. It builds up pressure to combust the air fuel mixture at this point and turns into a rocket. Old school guys will take out the spark plug and stick something down in the cylinder to see how for up it is. You can also plug the hole with your finger and fell the vaccume suck hard on your finger. Kinda turns you on dosn't it?

There is always a mark on the timing chain on motors for TDC and there should also be one on the gear for the crank. You are supposed to line these up with precision.

Angry

I read where ppl have not placed it on TDC and didnt have trouble, but there's a higher risk of the chain jumpin a tooth when cctl was taken out. I'm beyond aggervated and ready to sell it. if the valves have been placed outta time or wtv..can i ride the bike or do i need to get them adjusted straight away?

The sound seemed to come from top of engine or chain..like a vibration/ticking mix...I could almost swear it wasnt doing that before...I dont understand how it could be doing this when all I did was replace the CCTL..and I made sure where the crank case cover on the right of bike...I turned it to TDC like some ppl had said to..I afraid to ride it, b/c I dont wanna blow the engine, bend valves, wtv this may be.

Cbrgirl-I believe you are very misunderstood on what the cctl is and its function AND the correct way to install an automatic cctl. Your old one dotted orange cctl that came from the factory was faulty (as was the one orange dotted cctl that came on my 01) The wear mark on your old cctl tip is merely the spot where the chain tension/friction point was...as the rpm's go up and down the automatic tensioner lifter adjusts with it..manual cctl's (i.e ape's) stay stationary..anyway..forget tdc..I am not sure why you were even messing with that to begin with...the cctl is a simple plug n play direct swap..you simply unscrew the two screws..remove the old cctl..remove gasket if it did not already come off with old cctl...line up new gasket and new cctl and install both screws back in then simply pull the pin...the pin spring loads the tensioner...start up the bike and the tensioner will take it from there....did you install it just as I stated here?

if youre mechanically inclined then i wouldnt recommend you trying to mess with cam chains. better just take it to a real mechanic so you dont blow your engine. they have to be timed and the tensioner has to be properly adjusted
