To be honest there probly isn't a set time, just make sure it isn't dirty and it will perform just fine. I would recommend K&N they do make a difference.

I changed mine at 13k miles, it was absolutely disgusting and my mpg were quite below average. Wouldn't hurt to open the air box and take a looksy.

yep, you'll just have to open it up and look at it.

Easy enough to do. I'm in the same situation as you having recently purchased a private party bike. Go through the bike and check/do the general maintenance items so you have a starting point for future maintenance intervals and the peace of mind that your bike is in good condition. Do what you can (great way to learn the bike) and find a shop you're happy with for the rest.

/\ Good call, Incompatable, +1 /\

The K&N is the way to go, last filter you'll have to buy. Just clean and re-oil every
once in a while, they last forever. Breathes just a little better, but not enough
to force a jet change.

I've got almost 17k miles on mine, and it barely looks any different. Just a little piece of crud here or there.
