Easy enough to do. I'm in the same situation as you having recently purchased a private party bike. Go through the bike and check/do the general maintenance items so you have a starting point for future maintenance intervals and the peace of mind that your bike is in good condition. Do what you can (great way to learn the bike) and find a shop you're happy with for the rest.

The K&N is the way to go, last filter you'll have to buy. Just clean and re-oil every
once in a while, they last forever. Breathes just a little better, but not enough
to force a jet change.
