Looks more like some oil residue that wss in your coil boot. You want them to be fairly clean, but i don't think that's bad enough to cause an issue.

Thanks for the tip. They were from Dave Silver (reputable Honda parts dealer) but I'll check.

There was a tiny blob of oil in the bottom of the plug well (from a weeping rocker cover bolt) but not inside the coil boot that I could see. I'll keep an eye on it though. Thanks.

The dodgy plug and coil were in pot #1 and the downpipe on that pot was running about 20° cooler than he other three so I've swapped the plug and coil to another pot to see if the cooler pipe moves with it.
I'm child minding 3 grandkids today so it will have to wait until tomorrow before I can finish re-assembling the bike to test.

I cleared the codes and went for a blag round. It was still running rough as chuff at low revs. Re-checked the fault codes - none showing.

Did you get your MAP sensor vacuum line and IAT sensor plugged back in?

Yes thanks. I'd had to unplug them both to get the airbox off to get at the plugs and coils. I guess turning the ignition on with them unplugged registered them as faulty with the ECU.

I've replaced the plug with track marks on it with a new one. Waiting for a used stick coil off eBay now - £12. Hope it's OK. Brand new ones are £86 each!

FItted the £12 second hand coil stick and went for a 50 mile blag round today. It's running sweet as a nut! Touch wood, it looks like it's fixed.

And thanks for the tips and pointers guys.

Even though I couldn't help, I'm glad to hear you found (and fixed!) the problem!
