^ Um...Shadow-0, Me-1. Aren't you supposed to change the sprockets AND chain together as a kit. Because the new sprockets will wear faster with a used chain and vice-a-versa. Thus requiring premature replacement. (And who can afford that, broke or not) And most chains that are bought are sent out a little long, and require a few links to be removed. (Mine did)

 

chains are usually sent out based on stock specifications. every chain i've ever gotten has been the exact length i needed it to be. maybe it's just the place i get it from, but they always send me the right amount of links.

and yes skooby, you are supposed to do them both.

If you order a chain for a specific bike, they usually cut to the correct length. If you order just a chain in a box, you get to cut. I order all mine "in the box" with 120 links for the 600 because of sprocket changes. Stock will fit a -1/+2 easily.

Bottom line - if you don't have tools to break a chain, order the right length!

Luck or what you ordered. It really depends on the chain. For example, a DID 520ERV3 chain only comes in 120, 130, and 140 lengths, so if you want the X-Ring chain, you have to cut (which is what I use). A DID 520VM, which is a good chain but much less the cost of the ERV3, comes in about every link size between 100 and 120, so you can get one that fits out of the box (they do the cutting at the factory).

 

oooh., i always get the BikeMasters O-Ring chain, 525,etc., etc. and it always fits. soo it must be the same deal as the DIDs.

 

what is gonna be the top speed of the bike if i make -1 + 2 ? right now its 159 mph .. its gonna drop a lot?

 

Couldn't you argue that a smaller front sprocket might accelerate wear on the chain versus a larger rear sprocket. Thats my worry. I think I'm going +3 rear as opposed to -1 front.
