01 F4i gas tank removal
Do you need to drain the tank before disconnecting the stuff under the tank?
Looks like 2 small breather tubes, an elecrical connector & 2 bigger (fuel?) pipes

I guess the simple question I need tha answer to is:
If I undo & unplug the 5 wires/pipes from under the tank will gas come out or not?

yes ... unless you use a pair of these on the fuel line

Ijust did this a couple weeks ago... go get yourself a siphon and empty as much of the tank as possible... helps when you stand the tank up right on its edge while it’s still connected easier to get it all out... Take two vice grips and clamp the two hoses, one that is connected to the fuel filter, and the other that is connected to the fuel rail. Once you have clamped them tight put a towel underneath the area where you will remove the hoses from because regardless there is still a little bit of fuel in the lines... this is the best way, once you have done that remove the hosesand then remove the tank. The remaining gas that is in there you can drain by retrofitting your siphon if it’s the right size over one of the outlet lines that the tank has. That is if you care to completely drain it. I just left the vice grips on the hoses and hid them while I was painting. The f4i's don’t have a shutoff valve this is the only way to get the tank off. The only drawback to having fuel injection
Thanks Yan, pretty much what I ended up doing. Had to get ready for work before I finished though.
Which end of the main hose is best to undo (the one that looks like brake line ends) the tank end or the other end?
The others look pretty easy.

Hey how did the removal work out? Im planning to remove mine this weekend so it could go out to be painted in a couple of weeks! Just wanted to know how it turned out?
I used a gas can & the syphon tube thing that YAN has posted above. I got one from Tractor supply but I saw the same thing at Walmart for a little less, about $4.50 I think.
just get out as much as you can which is hard near the end as the tube keeps curling up but once I got almosy all of it out & just undid the stuff under the tank & only a few drips came out.
