Default Temp gauge pegged??

Greetings. I'm a lurker, but now have a question of my own!

Bought an F2 a few weeks ago and everything has been awesome. Today I was driving on the freeway (in very light rain) and I noticed that both of the turn signal indicators on the dash are slightly illuminated. I was just finishing my commute, so didn't worry about it too much. When I started the return trip, all was well and they were not illuminated. Then after a few miles, they came back on and the temp gauge pegged all the way to the max. Then the tachometer started shooting up and down randomly... it's only done that once and it quickly stopped. So the turn signal indicators stay on most of the time and the temp gauge will shoot back and forth between normal and pegged.

The bike is definitely not over heating... it feels fine and runs as well as before. The only thing that has occurred in the last few days for the bike was a wash, oil change, and rain...

Is this an electrical problem?? Thanks for any help.

Def sounds electrical. Since the bike doesn't have a central body control computer, then this all sounds like something in the wiring harness, probably up behind the headlight (under the cluster)

Until I can get home and look through the wiring schematic, that's the way I'd lean:

Check your charging voltage. A bad r/r or connector can make and electrical system do wacky things.

Damn, Demon is on it today! Like he said, Rectifiers are funny right before they go out. Check the voltage before you plan to ride anywhere or make sure you have roadside assistance.

Awesome. Thanks for the inputs. I know this is a ridiculous question, but how do I check the voltage? I can do mechanical repairs but I am completely retarded when it comes to electrical systems .

Not a ridiculous question, it's more common than you think. I'll find you some. For starters, put a voltmeter on the battery and take the bike to 5k rpm. It should read 13.5v-14.5v.

Here you go. Some other threads on the subject.

Thanks for the info 74demon.
I know we have a volmeter lying around somewhere. When I find it, I will post back with results.

Right now, it is doing the problem much less. When it does, if I turn the turn signals on and off very quickly, it will quit. Also, when I turn on the high beams, the rpm's on the tach and the temp on the temp gauge will decrease .... definitely sounds like an electrical problem!

Okay, just checked the charging voltage this morning. At 5k rpm it is reading a constant 13.65V.

While I had the seat off, I did notice that one of the wires connecting to the brake light is practically bare. There are two green, two green/yellow, and two orange/brown wires... one of the orange/brown wires is the one.

After fixing those stripped wires going to the tail light, it appears that the problem has stopped. I drove 80mi today and had no issues whatsoever...
