So here is the deal, last riding season my bike ran like a champ. Over the winter it was left outside under a cover. The two weeks ago I start getting it ready to ride this season and it wont crank. I have replaced the plugs, battery, cleaned the air filter, checked the fuses and even upgraded the rectifier with a recommended suzuki one i tested the side stand and kill switches to make sure they aren't sorted out and still nothing. I don't know what left to check. I have to add that the tank was about 1/8 full when the bike was stored. I don't know if getting gas because I think the switch was left in the on position over the winter, and not sure if the tank is gettn pressure or what not. I thank you in advance for all help because I am missing out on some very pretty days in NC.

 

Okay so you should be specific about "nothing". When you say nothing, I think no cranking when you say "nothing" as that literally looks and sounds like NOTHING. Is the motor cranking over and no starting? Is it sitting there like a lazy ex-gf? Does your bike act like it's on welfare? (god I'm a hater)

Anyways, provided we've got the same idea of nothing (nothing = literally no things happening) what I would do post all the work you've done is see about bypassing the starter solenoid:

See the top two terminals? With the battery still connected jumper those. The standard method is to put a screw driver accross the starter solenoid, however it may not be an option as there is that darn pesky plastic tab in the way on that solenoid (holy lameness batman!). Be creative on a jumper that is SAFE to touch since that is straight off the battery and will give you the full jolt of the bike battery!


Anyways, once jumpered, that SHOULD cause the bike to try and turn over. If your bike starts by doing this, your starter solenoid is bad. If it does not, SOMETHING in the safety setup is killing the starter and the spark. This is designed so the bike won't start with the kickstand down, in first with the clutch out, etc etc. Doing this test should help shed some light on the issue.


Then again... it's all dependant upon if we have the same "nothing"

 

I see your point let me go a step further. I the bike tries to crank ie the starter turns over but the bike doesn't start. I have tried with the choke, with the clutch in, tapping the throttle, with out air filter housing. In any case all I get is the starter trying to turn the motor over. I would assume its getting spark but no gas, with the new battery, plugs and rectifier. Could my peticock be fubarred? where is not getting gas? Could have missed something?

 

Yeah your petcock could be messed up, or you could have missed some vaccum lines.

Do the hanging hose method for gas delivery, or pull an old lawnmower gas tank and run that to the carbs with no petcock (so it just flows on down). That will ensure fuel delivery.

 

I double checked the two vaccuum hoses from the tank one was loose so I retightened it and now I think its getting gas now but still no crank just the starter turning over. u think spraying starting fluid in the carbs will help free up junk that many be hanging around from being stored?

 

I know you replaced the plugs but did you check to make sure you have spark by grounding each one out and watching it get clean blue spark? After cranking does your exaust smell of gas at all?

Have you checked your oil for gas? Possibility your petcock failed and let gas seep through flooding your carbs and then into the engine.

 

I figure the petcock is goos cause when I removed the tank no gas leaked from it. Yes after cranking there is a faint gas smell. I haven't checked the oil yet....should I still do that? i haven't actually seen the spark plug fire.

 

You need 4 things for an engine to work air, fuel, spark, compression.

I would start with your spark. Air is hard to **** up and if you smell gas in the exhaust then its making its way there. If you are not getting any backfires while starting then the gas is probably just making its way into your exhaust not hitting any sparks anywhere. Pull each plug, inspect, test for spark.

If you can verify that you have good spark then you are looking at cleaning your carbs.

 

"crank" by the way is the starter turning the motor over. If your starter is going and turning the motor over, your motor is "cranking over".

Is this correct, or is your starter going and the motor not going anywhere?

 

yes the starter is turning but nothing else is happening.
