Caring for a wiring harness?
I am finally overhauling my bike. 24k miles of northeast ohio country is a lot.
I have my harness completely off my bike. I found out that there had definitely been some shoddy work done on my rear light section. The blinkers are definitely not stock, but I think the brakelight still is. I basically just snipped it all off at the longest point I could from the harness. There was electrical tape, duct tape, scotch tape, packing tape, saran wrap- you name it, holding these wires together. Not soldered, mostly just twisted together. There were about 4 extra wires with no homes from the blinkers, brake lights, and harness. Lots of sketchiness. I'll have to check the diagram and see what I am dealing with.
Basically, I would like to know what sort of chemicals I should and shouldn't use, and if it is wise to just go ahead and strip the whole harness of the tape/wrap? It is in terrible condition and it would make me piddle to see it looking new again. Also, if anyone has there bike apart, and could snap a shot of a completely stock rear light wiring section, I would send you some cookies. I am still fairly new to reading diagrams, it helps to see it in person, sorta.
Thanks

Alright, the harness took backseat to the rest of my dis assembly. I have my frame stripped down to my forks, and swingarm. Gonna have a ton of sanding and degreasing to do. I tried some of that spray and it worked great on the brittle areas of the wires, btw. Especially in a non heated garage- I sorta needed it.
About the wire harness. I am sort of confused. The rear turn signals show only two wires per side in the wiring diagram, but I have 3? I am guessing thats why I had loose wires before I took it all apart.
And also, can I wire my blinkers into a stock tailight, or do you need a special relay for that?

It is possible that the original owner tried to install rear running lights. That might be why there are 3 wires. Hondas only have running lights in the front. If you are going to retape the harness, I would recommend retaping a portion at a time. That way all the routing & split offs can remain in the same location. If you remove all the tape at once & then go about retaping it might be hard to get the splits in the correct place.
As for the the tail light. You basically wan to integrate the turn signals & brake/running lights into the rear light? Uhaul sells a trailer wiring harness for about $15 bucks.
