Would you buy a 954 with zero service history ?

Default Would you buy a 954 with zero service history ?

Its a 2002 with 15,000 miles on the clock, 1 previous owner (apart from the owner now of course), the seller says he has no previous mot's etc and no service history..... i was going to see it and see if it's condition checks out, but i am very nervous, i like invoices, receipts, mot's etc etc, they just add to the overall package.

I change my oil all the time, but I don't save receipts on the off chance that some neurotic buyer down the road might want to see them.

If you have a shop or dealer change your oil, then I could see doing it, maybe, but I still probably wouldn't keep track of them.

I'll buy it, but wait, i did buy mine w/o service records, without test ride, with seeing the bike in person.

depending on the seller?

Not everyone service at the stealership & keep receipt. I've used fresh synthetic oil on my bike every oil change and don't save receipt.

I think it's the matter of finding that perfect used bike owner...don't rush. I would buy the bike if the seller is 45years old with kids...you want to buy from responsible sellers...

Cheers, i am a bit OCD, but to not even keep the previous years mot's ???? Where is the harm in that, you would have to actually go to the trouble of throwing it away every year when you get a new one !!! Who would do that.

records or not, use common sense. go over it with a fine toothed comb. if it looks good, buy it. then, when you get it home, go over it again, clean it, check all the bolts, check the chain, adjust everything you can, and change all of the fluids anyway. give yourself piece of mind that it's worthy of your life and a service starting point.

id rather buy a bike that the guy said "i did everything myself so no service records" and tell me about what he did then buy a bike from some kid that had every receipt for every little thing - who has never touched the bike himself.


that to me shows, "i have no idea what goes on with my motorcycle - so a service technician has done everything for me every time the manual has said i need to do it." who knows what problems it could actually have.

not to mention - i swear shops can "smell" those kind of kind of customers and i don't think they do as good of work when they know the kid has no idea what goes on inside the motorcycle. (i knew a guy who worked at a really bad shop in college. the shop's owner would routinely NOT do the service requested for some jobs (like throttle cable adjustment) and charge the customers for a .5 labor anyways)

it's just like buying a "race" bike.... people get scared away from that - but i love it. racers take WAY better care of their bikes than any of us do, they know EVERYTHING about what they're selling because they've most likely have touched every bolt themselves.





so in synopsis, i would (and have) buy a 954 with zero service history - neither of mine came with them.

What does "mot's" stand for?

I see it's a UK thing. Some sort of inspection certificate? We don't have any sort of inspections in Florida and many other states in the US don't have anything for motorcycles.

Lots of people in the US change their own oil. We have an auto parts store on every corner that will gladly recycle it for free.

Bought mine without any previous service history or even a test ride. I'm one of those that keeps every single receipt to include gas, cleaners, parts, etc. but I do the majority of the work on it.

Ministry Of Transport. they have to have their vehicles inspected every year. its just another way to tax the u.k.'ers.

ever see that big circular thing (usually put on the chain guard) on uk bikes - that's it.








...you need the queen's permission to change your own oil in the uk.

I have seen some of the bikes and cars that have failed their mot inspection !!!! If we did not have it then these death traps would still be running about, i am glad we have a yearly inspection !
