Default Tire PSI Reading

So I got this new digital gauge to check my tire pressure and my front tire reads 20 PSI and rear 25 psi. It should be 36 and 42. I tried putting more air in but tire seems pretty inflated.
Could the gauge just not be reading it correctly? the gauge works on my car just fine, i called the manufacturer and they said the bike valve might be jammed?? Any ideas on what I should do?

Should take less than a minute per wheel to do.

I run 34/36 in my tires. When I bought the bike, the front tire was at 20psi. What are you using to add air?
