Now, here's a pic of one of the motors that had piston slap that was way out of spec. If you look, you can easily see the rings around the entire cylinder.... I know that motor had WAY more carbon build-up and that may make it easier to see the rings, but... take a gander for yourself. I easily stuck a .012 feeler gauge comfortably/easily all the way around the piston. So I have no idea what the measurements accurately were, but sticking a flat .012 gauge all the way around and I could audibly hear how bad the piston slap was, I was for sure I was out of spec.

But that scoring looks really bad (but all 954's look like that...). And the piston heads look weird in some of those pictures... I don't know what that looks like - maybe almost like some molten solder that has splattered on them...












I'd redo everything if you have the money to do so... Just so it's a completely fresh motor.

 

Yeah my pistons do not look as bad as that to where you can see the rings. The scoring however is what I am worried about. What you see on top of my pistons is some gasket sealing crap that I used on the old head gasket to get the engine started. The top of the case will be thoroughly cleaned as well as the pistons to get all of that gunk off. I have a lot of new parts that I am getting ready to order along with a new head gasket.


So do you think I will be able to get through the season with this engine? I will not be riding the bike hard or racing just commuting and weekend riding. I could come up with the 1k for the engine but if I can avoid it for now than I would rather do so. I still have over 2k in parts to buy.

 

How much are you catching your finger nails in the scoring?

 

Just barely on a few grooves. I think I am going to try and run it and see if I can make it through the season and rebuild in the winter.

 

Nothing wrong with that. I was catching my finger nails in every single one of mine, and I could rock the piston back and for enough to make a noise.

If yours isn't that bad, go for it.

 

I am inching closer and closer to getting this thing going. I should be charging ahead starting in May. I am going to try and get the engine put back together within the next few weeks. I would essentially be able to ride with the engine back together but I am going to hold out until I get some more details done.

 

And you're going to put it together, right? Not send it out to US Chrome or somewhere to get plated? I look forward to seeing it.

 

Yes, no engine work being done except the head being cleaned, valves being lapped, and put back together with new seals. The engine is just getting a new head gasket and some new head bolts. I am still looking at $2,400 just for the rebuild without doing the engine. I need new fork seals and a lot of OEM Honda parts and misc. parts and I want a lot of new parts as well as some PC'ing to be done so she looks good when she hits the road.
