The previous owner of my 954 put a slight bend in the upper inch or so of the tag and drilled 2 holes through the undertail just behind the stock rear fender mount. Then installed the tag using bolts with nuts on the inside. I was worried about it when I first got the bike but after talking to several police officers and state troopers asking them if my tag placement was ok they all said yes. Not one said anything about the slight bend in the tag.

ok, here are some more pics. the middle bolt actually goes into the trunk and is held on by a locknut (the previous owner used it to hold the plate on by itself by drilling a hole in the license plate, but as i found out, when you do that, the plate will crack to the point where it falls off...). i cut the aluminum stock down to 7 in. i put a hole in the exact center, then tightened down the middle bolt. i then took a drill, and drilled into the aluminum stock an inch or so away from the center (these are the phillips head screws). you can see where they come out underneath the tail section, and again, i used some lock nuts to hold them on. i used those screw type bolts as opposed to hex heads because they sit almost flush with the stock, which is important. the, i lined up the license plate, drilled holes into the stock to hold the license plate on, and you're done.

This probably won't help you, but might help someone else. My bike had the stock fender, so I pulled the tag mount off that and removed the whole fender by unbolting it. I drilled two holes in the sides of the under tail and used two L brackets to bolt the stock tag bracket to the under tail. I tried to bolt the stock tag light back on using the stock mounting holes, but that was a loosing battle. It just so happens to fit very tight between L brackets, so I enlarged the hole in the under tail for the wires and super epoxied it back on.

Just ride without the plate, if you get pulled over just say if fell off and you have to wait till you get home to fix it!

I hear you but, depending on what state and the mood of the leo. they can give you a ticket for an improper mount, ask me how I know.

I believe they have repealed that ridiculous law, but don't quote me on that.

It's still a $1,000 fine for a wheelie though.

well i hope they did....

i have to think that anytime someone tried to fight that in court, it would get dropped by a logical judge....

when it came about, the gov specifically said it was aimed at sportbikes....which i never understood because i see more choppers, cruisers, and customs with vertical and hidden license plates than i do sportbikes....
