Question Need a diagnosis of my second gear problem.

Any help would be much appreciated as I will try to work on this myself if the problem is fixable without special tools.

Last fall I low-sided the bike and scratched the steeda cover pretty good. I replaced it but didn't ride the bike much at all for those few weeks and didn't ride it hard when I did.

The problem now is that while under half or more throttle (any decent acceleration) at around 9k rpm (now it's getting to be less) when the power band comes into full swing it just pops out of second gear! If I don't upshift the bike will go back into second after the revs come down.

Also note that first gear will pop out under deceleration at higher rpm's.

Again, these problems have been around since I low-sided the bike and replaced the steeda cover. Not sure which action caused the problem though I would assume low-siding the bike somehow bent the shift fork so I'm hoping that that one of the shift forks is all that needs replacing and that it can be done without cracking the case.

I have done some research and have found some good posts but wanted to post this as no other story was the same as mine. I'm grateful for any help offered, and if nothing else thank you for reading this long post!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you have a bent or worn shift fork. I don't recall if the 954 has an independent tranny like the 1kRR's ... if not you'll have to split the cases to replace the fork. Honestly the work required to repair the problem is about $50 in parts but the labor is a pain. Sorry.

my bike does the same thing with second gear and what I have found out according to the service manual you can get to the shift forks and the shift drum by dropping the oil pan without taking the motor out I am going to change mine out within the next month

Thank you very much for post. I actually just downloaded the Repair Manual (the link has been dead for awhile but a new one is up now!) and will check that soon. I'll be praying that the job only requires getting under the bike and dropping the oil pan. That would be awesome!

Your right there with me then! Hopefully I will get a chance to work on it sometime early next month when this semester is over. I'll have the parts in a few weeks so we'll have to keep in touch. Thanks!

I'll be looking at that service manual over the weekend.

Just picked up the parts, hopefully I'll have time to work on it in May!
