Default my baby is burning oil :(

hey guys how are you? well im not a big poster because most my questions can be answered by reading, but this one i need help with as its specific to me. i have a 02 954rr 33112 k on it 20k of them were hard k, i always let her warm up and maintain it quite well, well my problem is shes letting out a good puff of oil smoke when i hit the gas hard and quick, from smell and eye its not burning on idle. so my question is not a for sure answer but more of opinion and help, im thinking only things it could be is rings or valve seals, i will be doing a compression test to hopefully eliminate the rings but is there a way to tell if its the valve seals without removing thehead? also if anyone has done the seals is it pretty easy i did my shims at 24k and seals are obnly a little bit deeper, sad thing is riding season just starting why could it not happened at the end of last year

First off make sure it is blue smoke, (usually means oil) white is generally coolant, and dark smoke means she's runnin' rich. Usually when you are snapping the throttle they puff a little dark smoke. Second thing, if the valve seals are going bad they usuallypuff a bunch of smoke upon cold startup (oil seeps through while sitting and burns off right away). I think the compression test is the first step, with that many hard miles she may need re-ringed.Good Luck, and let us know what you find out!

Start by checking the oil level. Quick and easy!

My old gix 750 started doing that also around 45k miles. Like stated do your compression test, if thats ok its almost gotta be the seals. Thats what it was on mine and it was during spring. Well whether right or not i let it go for the season, 22k miles later i changed them. I say that because over the whole riding season theynever got any worse or cause me any problems at all, so maybe you could wait till a rainy spell comes along, prolly wont hurt ya any.

assuming blue smoke....

Rings bad - smoke on acceleration
valve seals bad - smoke on startup, smoke on deceleration

A compression test may not really tell you anything. That is telling you the sealing ability with the top two compression rings. The oil ring or scraper will not be tested and they can be worn or losing tension and allowing more oil to pass threw than suppose to and will cause oil burning. As for valve guides, yeah should smoke when you start up, also when you are running and chop the throttle, the larger build up of vacuum will suck up more oil than while accelerating or steady speed. there is a way to replace seals without removing the head, but it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't Something you might want to try while you are doing your compression test, open your throttle and with a flash light see down the port and see if you are able to get a look at the valve stem of your intake valves. They should be dry, and if they look wet, yeah valve stem seals! Can do the same with exhaust but have to remove the pipe! So not really useful at this moment!

My experience with the 954 is that the cylinders are not plated. There is sometype of silicone coating on the aluminum cylinders. Erion Racing told me they were straight aluminum. The cylinders are more then likely scored up. I went through 2 engines. Finally bought weisco 1mm pistons and had the cylinders bored and nikkasill plating. I shouldn't have to worry about that.
