Sorry for the thread jack, but what grade aluminum are the frames made of? Can you weld straight t6 to cast aluminum ? The varying shades of Grey with these things are a bit confusing to me.

I should clarify my questions, the subframe mount and the parts of the frame are cast. To have a better chance of pulling this off it'd be great to know what grade of aluminum they are. If I'm understanding this correctly the extruded aluminum is 7something and the rest idk.

Any ideas?

You think the main frame is a 7k series alloy? I was thinking 4k or 6k from looking at it, but I'm not sure. I doubt its a 7k series because of how hard they are to work with.

I'd lurk on some welding forums for tips on welding cast and what filler rods guys are using.

Just remember, if you have to notch and box the frame in a bunch of areas, it'll kill your rigidity and handling.

And what swingarm will you use?

Finally read the pdf and from what I can understand, you're right, it is saying that its a 7k series...

Your google-game is strong. I've been looking for that info for a long time and have never found it. Good job.

I'm a persistent bugger found it on a UK miller welding site.. I was thinking the original swinger using the brace we have been discussing with some sort of rear mounting point.

This would be a lot easier with a wrecked 1000 for parts/mounts. I'll be waiting for a while anyway no moolah.

From my understanding it must be a 7005 aluminum. In the PDF they discuss the particular make up of the aluminum for the extrusions so I cross referenced that on Google and came up with 7005. Your welcome to double check as I could be terribly wrong.

I don't think you're wrong, but from everything I've been told, a 7k is serious trouble as far as welding goes.

I'd join a welding forum, state that you are curious about welding the frame, post that pdf and see what some of those guys say. They'll know, or at least, point you in the direction to get the info you need.

So I've been digging around on some welding websites, and they Dont seem very responsive to my idea. Its confusing since gsxr guys can buy new motor mounts to be welded to the frame. I'll be looking further into this and may just buy a 1000 frame to massacre.

Spoke with a frame guy in Cali today that does work for Yamaha and Suzuki race teams. Told me that shortly after the 954 came out they melted a bunch of the frames down to figure what they hell they were made out of. They are made out of a silicon(?) Aluminum or basically 4xxx, he gave me some ideas on how to do the swap and told me the aluminum is easily weldable.

With all that said I am in much better spirits.
