Default Hole in the rear wheel?

Hey guys,

I remember noticing a square hole through the hub of my 954's wheel the other day when I was rolling it around in the garage. That doesn't seem right. Is there supposed to be a plug or
something to fill that hole? If so I apparently don't have it. Seems like if a mouse crawled in there and died it would definitely throw the wheel/tire out of balance while you're riding down the road!

On the spoke? or Rim? Theres usually a hole in the spokes there is in each of the 3 spokes per wheel on mine.

I'm sure that's what I saw. I was just rolling the bike in the garage and glanced down and saw it. I meant to look at it closer later but didn't think much of it.

I was just sitting here at work and remembered it. I decided since I wasn't doing anything productive I'd ask one of you folks about it.

Thanks,
SIK

Most of the parts that can be hollow, are hollow. The spokes are hollow and so should the some of the area around the hub. If it was all solid the rim would weigh a ton, hollow rims save weight and they do not hurt structural rigidity. This is why good roll bars for cars are hollow, because it is the outside diameter of the bar that creates stiffness, not the thickness of the metal. And by hollowing it out, you save precious pounds.

I'm all about that joe! I was just wondering if there was supposed to be some sort of plug or something in there. I guess I'm good to go.

So what Mazda do you have?

If you notice your valve stem is directly inline with the hole your talking about(which isnt supposed to be plugged). This allows you to get the valve out without bending it to the left or right when your changing tires. Everybodys has the hollow center with these holes. No worries.

Well I have been a RX-7 fanatic for about 4 years now (since I was 16 and now I am 20). I have been saving up for one since then but then I decided to buy a bike and cars just dont do it for me anymore. A couple months ago I had a guy offer to trade me his 3rd gen RX-7 R1 with lots of good mods for my F4i and 5k cash. It was a pretty good deal but I couldnt let myself not have a bike. Even when faced with my dream car I couldn't just stop riding. I wish I had a RX-7 but I can't afford both and riding is more important. I am toying with the idea of getting a miata this spring and doing a flying miata turbo kit or building a spec miata to go race. But then again I want to do several track days with my bike this year so I doubt that will happen either. I wish I was rich.

Hahaha! Yeah I wish I was rich too

I always liked the 3rd gen RX-7s. I nearly bought one back before the "fast and furious" days and the prices skyrocketed. Sheesh.
Anyway I nearly bought an RX-8 this last time I traded cars but I needed the room - got 2 kids and one is just a baby so I have that HUGE car seat back there. SO I got a loaded out v6 Mazda 6 - with a 5 speed at least hah!

Later,
SIK
