Default Hairline scratches in cylinders - what to do?

Hi guys

I have just had my newly purchased 954, '02, 29.000 km for service / inspection. as there was a Klonk noise from the gearbox, when idling. (root cause was a poor bearing in the inlet of the gearbox, that needs to be changed. no big deal)

BUT my concern is that when removing the clutch cover, my mech. was able to inspect the right cylinder with endoscope, and he found some fine scratches in the front/rear of the cylinder.
The bike has been running without any problems like decompression and so on. Also confirmed by two friends, that are both mechs.

I have searched for similar cases at the forum, but was not able to find anything.

My concern is if this might cause a sudden block of a cylinder leading to blockage of the rear tyre? if this is not the case, I might concider not changing the engine!

Have any of you heard of this type of problem before? and have you any recommendations of what to do?

thank you all in advance

/Jan

my first 954 had that pretty bad. The last owner helicoiled the plugs in and knocked the little tabs from the job into the cylinders... Still runs hard to this day- I ride with the dude I sold it to all the time. The compression is still within spec.

Default to Nealio240z - more detailed explanation

Hi Nealio240z

I'm not too good at english, is it possible for you to explain your message in a more simple way?

Did you do anything with the cylinders or just let the scratches in the cylinders be as they where?

Thanks again.

/Jan

Hi Jan, I think Neilio240Z is just saying, 'don't worry'. If the bike is running with no problems and compression is OK, just enjoy the bike and ride it

exactly =) Just have fun with it. If it really bothers you, do a compression check on all cylinders- they should be around 174 psi per cylinder.

Its very common in the 954 from what i've been told. This is due to Honda's piston design for this engine. The piston skirts are so short that the piston will rock back in forth in the cylinder causing the scratches. I tore mine apart at about 4500 miles and noticed some minor scuffing and was told its fine put it back together and run it. Threres some info about it on fireblades.org and everyone says that its normal and the bike will run forever.

I'm not a 954 guru, but fine scratches are normal wear after awhile. I stress 'fine'!!! if compression hasnt drop then I wouldnt worry about it
