Default Bike leaking oil near, Gear Shifter.

Hi,

I keep noticing oil all over my bottom fairing near the shifter, When I checked it out I saw a black bolt with oil on it, so I'm guessing it's slowly dripping from this bolt what could be the cause of this does it just need tightening?

Here's a picture of where it's leaking from

-Thanks

sprocket cover?....

oil isn't leaking from THAT...

it could be excessive chain lube/cleaner build-up. take it off and look behind it. i sincerely doubt oil could be leaking from the countershaft seal...

unless you see a little puddle underneath your bike, don't stress too much

There is an output shaft seal behind the cover and front sprocket. Remove the cover and inspect it. Clean the seal off really good and ride it a little, then recheck.

Thanks Conrice, I didn't know what it was. but somehow it got coated with black build up.

That might be what it is, because today I WD-40'ed the whole chain because I am out of chain lube. But I am still not sure if all is well with the bike. I haven't noticed anything running weird.

Here's a older picture of where the black shows up it may just be build up like you said.

that's normal. if you look at most 954 pics, you'll see some sort of build-up from chain lube or grease running down that fairing. yours happens to be very visible because it's red. mine are either titanium or black right there - it hides it a bit better.

i bet if you take it off you'll find 1/4 inch thick "sludge" build-up on the inside of that cover.

You are sure it's normal? Say I wipe it off and ride for 2 hours or so, I'll see fresh black on that same spot of the fairing. Thanks though this makes me feel better. The bike just had new tires put on it and a fresh oil change feels like it's running great although it does need a new chain next spring.

I just looked a few pictures of other 954rr's yeah I see the black in the same area. I was just worried because it looks so fresh after i wipe it, then check in about a hour of riding

Well what else would be leaking from that cover? You do say it is normal for black build up to go on the lower area of the fairing even if you do wipe it off correct?

Chain lube will get everywhere, thats why they run chain guards and covers. It will get goo on the faring behind the kickstand. That's normal. The inside of that cover will have it caked all over. Cleaning it every once in a while never hurts. Now if it's oil, that's not so normal.

Yea, even the non-flick stuff goes EVERYwhere. If you just lubed it and wiped it off and took it for a ride, it is definitely going to get back on there.
