Default Bar mirror fail

Was installing handlebar mirrors and the screws that came with the kit was a little too big so I decided I'd tap to a bigger screw hole. Well now the handlebar Insides free spin in the middle of tapping. What are my options if any at all?

A pic would help. Are these bar end mirrors?

Assuming this is a bar end mirror - the handlebar weight has 2 parts. The inner part is number 8 on the diagram. It's only held in by tension, so when you removed the old bolt, it loosened off. When you ran the tap in, instead of cutting new threads, it rotated the inner weight

The solution would be to remove the tap (hopefully it hasn't jammed in there too hard) and run in using a correct 6mm bolt. If it tensions up, you'll be fine. If not, you'll have to replace the part, since there would be no way to hold the mirror in place without it

What was the rationale for using a larger bolt?
