Default 5th to 6th is a PITA

Got an '03 954rr, never been abused, 15k on the odometer, I'm the 2nd owner after a 55 year-old guy traded it in on a Vulcan. Problem is the tranny doesn't seem to like the upshift from 5th to 6th--most of the time it is fine, but other times it misses the shift in a very bad way, making anastygrinding/skipping sound. I can clutch in when it happens, upshift again, and it pops right in, but l'd like to not have to worry about it. I'm not running through the gears hard, never wheelie/stoppie, not upshifting without the clutch, like I said, no abuse. Anyone else out there have this problem? I don't have any other problems with the tranny on upshifts, occasionally it won't downshift as accurately as I'd like it to ( I can rev-match downshifts with no problems, but can't clutch in and drop a gear or three ifa cagerin front of me does something stupid). Shift fork? I know that these trannys aren't the smoothest, but this seems just a wee bit TOO notchy. Any help at all is appreciated.

sounds like the gears are not meshing and or a ****ed up shift fork but that is nuts for 5/6th gear problems

did you know the 55 year old previous owner? Id be VERY skeptical of that first off.

5th to 6th? Its your forks most likely but I have never seen a bike mess up 5th to 6th.

Yep, I do know the guy, that's why I wasn't concerned about the abuse factor. To make it even more comical, he only used the bike for Iron butt rides--he difinetely made a statement when he did those.

Now, if I ride hard and shift at high revs, no problems. If I shift at 40mph, 3500rpm, then it occasionally wants to be a pain. Honestly, it doesn't happen all that often, but I figured I'd ask you guys anyway.

yea if your shifting into 6th at 40mph the bike is prob not going to like it. really at 40mph you should only be in second or third at the highest IMO. keep in mind you can do close to 100 in second gear if you really want to
