Default ticking

I have a ticking sound that I think is coming from the airbox, or in that area. I can only hear it at low r.p.m. around3 or4 grand. bike has 20,000 miles on it and my last service was 1200 miles ago. It almost sounds like a small knocking but the bike runs great. I'm going to pull my tank of this weekend and find out for sure but in the mean time any ideas?

sounds like the cam chain. install a cam chain tensioner and it wil fix that right up and give back some power. I just had mine done and no more ticking noise. about 60 bucks for the part.

BEFORE you buy anything, make sure thats what it is first. You don't want to spend money on a part and have the same noise. Go by a shop and let a mechanic listen and give you an opinion.

well they did it for free. See, the previous jackass who owned the bike put new plugs in and didn't tighten them nearly enough. so over the time i had it (few months) the plugs were backing out and eventualy one poped out and stripped the threads. so after 940 bucks the dealer did the following

1: plug a hole in the rear tire

2: tear down engine and re-thread the plug holes

3: since the motor was already torn down i had them put in a cam chain tentioner since i knew it needed one

The service manager is awesome, he gave me a nice discount on labor and included the labor for the cam chainten. and the tire plug into the massive labor charge to re-thread the holes. they say it took 9.4 hours pr something like that. The 920 bucks includes parts. 4 plugs, and cam chain ten.

since what is required to install the cam chain ten. is basicly the same as them re-threading the plug holes i imagine it would be the same hours of labor. remember they need to pull the engine and all plastics, and fuel tank off. so its not going to be cheap.

Get this, the noise i thought was coming from the air box was actually coming from the chain. I NEVER ride without my helmet so the noise was bouncing around all over the bike. I rode it without the helmet for about 5 minutes and realized it was coming from the chain turns out there was a dead spot in my chain and i am going to regear it anyway. -1 in front and +10 in the back wwwooooooooooohooooooooooo[sm=icon_rock.gif] and a little chain lube made it a lot quieter
