Default Needing a steering damper / stabilizer

Hey guys-
As i've been working on some riding techniques, it's come to my attention that the front end is getting squirly under full acceleration out of a corner. I'm really looking for just enough function to keep it from getting squirly, but I don't need a fancy looking scott's or GPR.

I know some peopel have modified gsxr 1000 stock damper's to work on our 929's, will the stock 954 work? Anyone got any ideas that don't cost $400 to render up?

here's a shot of my friends 954 w/ one on there (not sure if stock or not..guessing no) thinking this would be compatible.

my 954 doesn't have a stock damper... so im not sure about robbing one from any 954.

i know you dont want to spend a lot of money, but stock ones are usually replaced because they're junk. they're not adjustable, they're not made as well, etc. if you are really on the cheap and can make a stock GSXR one work, then do it.
but, i'd go for a scotts if you can afford it. the reason is that a scotts wont get ruined when you dump your bike (hopefully that wouldn't happen), they're built GREAT, they're adjustable, etc. if you are dead set against a scotts or gpr, i'd say any of the hydraulic piston kind (like your friend's). i think if you stay away from ohlins, they should be cheaper than $400.

keep you eyes out on ebay, craigslist, and anyone that may be parting a 929 out that has a damper on it.

Thanks Conrice-- i'm mainly looking for function over flash, so anything that will do the trick will be up my alley. I haven't ridden with one before hence my resistance for buying a $400 piece that I haven't even sold myself on. Thanks again for the advice

I bought a shindy steering damper for my 929rr. They are fairly cheap (cheaper then gpr or scotts anyway) I know that it may not be "as good" but ive had it on my bike for the past couple months and cant say that i have any complaints about it. Its out of the way, its adjustable and it keeps me from doing tank slappers or having head shakes do im happy with it.

I picked mine up for about $200 i think. And i bought it on kneedraggers.com . I dont have any pics of it but its pretty well hidden. It mounts to your front forks and the bracket thats attached to the frame. It was pretty easy to install. i think i had it all on in about 20mins

Pay the $400. It'll be worth saving yourself from a fall. It's well worth the money if you look at it that way...

There are a few writeups on how to modify a stock gixxer damper to provide much more damping. The general consensus is to fill them with 20wt fork oil and it works really well. You'll have to fab up a mount or buy the hohey mount to use one though.

I do believe the damper in the pic. is a hyperpro. That is the same kind im running. I picked it up on ebay for $265. It works great and has saved me a few times. The main thing I like about it is that you can have it set soft but if you go into a heavy headshake it stiffens on its own to compensate. A buddy of mine referred me to them and he wont buy anything else. I have seen some go for more and some for less on ebay so I would just check there.
