thats good advice!!! if you get a shop manual and have a few tools it wont be too bad, maybe a weekend project. pay attention to the torque specs and get some quality gaskets and parts and you should be fine. and here is a link to a guy out here in denver that is selling a head off of his 2001 929 for 120 bucks and he is willing to ship. http://denver.craigslist.org/mcy/1062092557.html
good luck

I have seen them helicoiled and work just fine. I think you can do it in the bike, but I think its a lot easier to see your timing marks and work on it in general out of the bike on a bench? Its a real bitch in the bike, and you have to take the front motor mount bolts out and let the motor roll forward. By then there isn't much holding it in?

I used the time-cert kit on my bike, it's awesome. I didn't remove the head either. All I did is rotate the motor with a wrench (pop the cover off) until the exhaust valve was open and the intake valve closed for the bad cylinder. You'll want to take the frame off for access and remove the valve cover to watch the valves. Have a friend stuff a towel in the muffler alongside an airhose so it seals up. After you drill and after you tap just blow air up the pipe and all the shavings will shoot out of the sparkplug hole. I've got over 2k on my time-cert and no problems at all. Additionally if you want to buy or rent my kit I have 9 inserts left. I have the extended kit and they are about $230 new. None of their distributors stock them because it's so rare for somebody to buy a 10x1.00mm insert. I ordered through a distributor and it was drop-shipped. Hope this helps and let me know if you're interested in mine.
