Default mysterious problem, all the oil drained immediately? smoke?

Greetings fam! new the board, and my first post isn't a happy one!

what happened: bought a cbr929 with 48,000 miles, came with a charging system issue. turns out, the stator was disconnected by the previous owner (who is a ****ing goober to say the least). tested the r/r, stator etc with my volt meter, reconnected the goods and the bike is charging. runs like a champ!

but then, a random trip to the grocery store. i roll off the curb (a short curb, 4 inches or so), turn the bike on, and upon hitting the starter, i hear a POP (more of a poof, the sound of compressed air?)

with the poof, smoke was pouring out of the airbox, and smoke filled the oil level window. turned the bike off IMMEDIATELY, only to notice that the bike was DUMPING oil. the majority of the oil came out in under 5 minutes, and i noticed that the coolant reservoir was empty.

the oil that came out didnt look super milky/light. it dumped into the belly pan, so its hard to say if they mixed before coming out, but i could definitely smell the antifreeze in the oil on the floor.

the fairings are coming off today, but in the mean time, does anyone have experience with something similar? what happened?

i have yet to hear of this on a 929 but sounds almost as if the head cracked.

I'm by no means an expert, just the first thing that comes to mind

Good luck,
Skin

where is dumping oil from? thats a HUGE piece of info.

is there oil in the airbox? like a puddle of it around the velocity stacks?

what color was the smoke coming out of the exhaust?

We need more info to help you, but.... I'm guessing you threw a rod and it went through the block. Look for large holes in the side of the case. It should be fairly obvious if this is the case.

Whatever you find, it probably wont be good.

hi I have heard of this myself and read that when they blow a stater they blow gaskets and big puffs of smoke and poofs now I have no idea how this happens but that said I was having charging probs on my 00 929 (only charged with headlight disconnected) I took it in to the shop and while he tested it I was there watching and guess what poof and puff of smoke and 2 batteries to get it home it stopped charging totally and the stator was fried had it re wound (he said it was the best he had seen) and now charges perfectly so I can say some how this sort of thing "can" happen but don't know about dumping oil prob depends on what gasket blows I guess I freaked when mine popped so try checking the stator while fixing it you don't wanna blow it again

Photos - need photos.

I can't imagine it threw a rod on start up unless you had a hydraulic lock - fuel leaking into the piston bores. And surely a leg out of bed would be VERY noisy!

When you rolled off the kerb did the bike bottom out on the fairing? I'm thinking you may have somehow cracked the sump?

Although smoke in the sump indicates that ignited fuel vapour is getting into the sump.

As for switching off.........How immediately was immediately? After you heard the pop or after you noticed the smoke? Was the bike running for 10 seconds or more like a minute?

I'm thinking it'll become more obvious when the fairings are off.

Cheers, SB

He hasn't posted anything else since it happened 2 months ago... I don't know why he wouldn't post more... we could have helped. But, c'est la vie.
