929 gearbox problems...
i was cruising @ about 40 mph and went to downshiftwhen the light turned yellow. when i hit the shifter down, the gear didnt engage, but rather felt like it fell in between gears. i felt (and heard) the teeth chattering erratically as i continued to pull in the clutch and attempt to bang the shifter into 5. so there i am, coasting across a red light intersection at a neck-breaking 37 mph, motor revving and gears grinding. i pulled to a stop, finally got the tranny to shift, got a false neutral, continued to downshift, then everything was in order. 5 mins later, the chatter came back, and as i shifted into 2nd, the tranny clunked, the rear tire chirped, and the motor now sounds like there is a rock bouncing around in the crankcase/transmission area at idle in neutral. if i put it into gear, the sound pretty much goes away, but comes back as soon as i accellerate. now, my question... has anybody experienced similar problems?does anybody know what it could be? the bike is stripped down and ready for the motor to drop out for repair or replacement, so if somebody could help me in one direction or the other, it would be GREATLY appreciated.by the way, i already checked the throw-out bearing and it is fine. sorry for the long-winded story, but i figured the more info i could give up front, the quicker and easier i can find a resolution. thanks!

RE: 929 gearbox problems...
hello, well i have had a similar problem with my 929.i dont have a solid solution
for you.i was holding a nice wheelie in 2nd gear and then bam felt like my chain broke..i did some researce and the bikes had a recall on the clutch baskets from honda.so if u did not already know about the recall u can still get it repaired..the great 929"s do also have a shift fork problem which there is no easy cure except to replace the shift fork and a new gear cluster...every now and then my bike does pop in between gears just like ur talking about,i just re shift and have never had more of a problem that the anoying noise it makes
when it does happen..well sorry for the long story but im bored...hope its interesting for u to know thats its not just ur bike...good luck and always ride red....1wheel

I had it fall out of 2nd one time and it never did it again so I would assume I diding shift good. I shifted and it went to 2nd and when i let the clutch out it accelerated for a second or so and revved never re-occurred. I would pull the clutch cover and look over your clutch basket.

RE: 929 gearbox problems...
what should i be looking for in the clutch basket? broken or over-worn parts? i started taking out the clutch pads and friction discs, but there were like 30 of them and i couldnt pull any further once they wererecessed into the basket. ive never seen anything like that before, it was pretty cool actually. i mean, ive heard of 3 plate clutches on cars but this is ridiculous! thanks guys.

RE: 929 gearbox problems...
when u take those disc out u have to keep them in order.fiber,metal,fiber..etc..
if u are not the original owner of your 929,i would call the dealer and tell the service guy u want to see if your bike has had the clutch basket recall done, they will ask for your vin # so have it ready..if your bike has 10k miles or more on the same clutch then it wont hurt to replace it..i do alot of track riding and stunting on both of my 929"s and i found that barnett carbon fiber clutchs work out good and is cheaper that a honda clutch..good luck
