Default 929 with 954 engine, 2 bros exhaust and flapper and air box mods

I finally found and bought a 2001 Honda CBR 929 RR. Like most things in my life I can get a ready roll bike I get a mutant my 929 has a 954 engine installed in it. I got it for $1400 along with the original 929 engine (it bad cylinder). Bike is currently something out of Mary Shelly's book - a monster with the heart of different bike in it - that being said I'm a sucker for challenges and I want to make it work. (I plan to eventually rebuild the 929 engine and restore it to some version of what Honda rolled out of that factory.) Bike currently has a two brothers exhaust with the exhaust flapper removed and the air box servo removed and a dummy switch installed to fool the PGM-FI that its still there. It had a Power Commander 3 installed with a 929 map...I have removed it because I figured the 929 map was half my problem. Bike will start but runs like crap and backfires before dying shortly after or anytime a load is put on it (i.e rev'ing the engine) without the PowCom 3 and not at all with it installed.

My first assumption is they kept the electrical side of the bike 929 and thats why the engine does run well. If I reprogram the PowCom 3 with a generic 954 map (I have no experience with power commanders or mapping engines) will this solve a lot of my problems? Or do I need a 954 PGM-FI unit for the engine?

What other 954 electrical parts should I consider should I look or change out to make this thing run right?

Thats enough for now....I need a master mechanic to guide me. At least someone to respond and laugh at me.

Welcome!

There were some challenges to doing that conversion. Putting it back may not be as easy as you think.
The swingarms between the two are different and required modification that may not be reversed easily.
The ECMs are different, so the harness won't mix.
The FI stuff is different, but should still work. Wonder which system you have....

Get to the bottom of the problem and run what you have. This is going to be hard to fix without putting hands on it. You are going to need to get into it and report every detail of your findings. May be best to seek help from someone local....

Thanks for the reply.....I'll start tearing it down tomorrow. I'll try to match part numbers so I can see what was done. I'm in BFE North Dakota, so I won't find a whole lot of help in a place where the vast majority ride HD Baggers. I was hoping to ride it once before I start digging into it....I'll have to settle for sitting in the seat. Bright side I got 5-6 months before riding weather hits in late spring.

Has it ever ran decently for you?

Start with checking the basics. Leaking FPR, kinked fuel lines, connectors clean and not burned, etc.

I've had the bike for about 36 hours. I have no basis to say it has ever ran well, previous owner said he rode it (and it ran well) for a season then parked it. I'll take the tank off tomorrow and start inspecting the things you've outlined. After some more research, I have to assume its got a 954 harness and ECU installed shouldn't work otherwise.

What little I have looked at, doesn't give me hope that someone did right by this bike - just little things hardware replaced (wood screws on air box - sticking through the bottom), bottom fairings push together and zip-tied. I know its small stuff but if you arent on the side of the road or doing emergency repairs, why not do the right thing and hit a hardware store or ebay for a fairing hardware kit.

I'm going to take my time. It needs to be cleaned and inspected thoroughly before I can expect to not be stranded on the side of the road waiting for someone to come rescue me.

The 929 harness will work as long as the ECM is 929. Easiest ways to know are cross the number on the ecm, or see if the fan switch in the radiator is being used. The 954 harness doesn't use that switch so there is no wire for it and would need the 954 dash to turn on thr fan unless it's on a manual switch.

Check the fuel lines before moving the tank. The lines can get kinked with the tank down but straighten out when lifted.

It does have a manual switch for the fan. So I guess its a 954 harness and ecu. I got a good look at the fuel lines this afternoon so I'll be careful. Already making a list of things to look at and verify and of things to replace. I'll include a picture or two for reference. Thanks for the words of wisdom.
