I posted a similar question, but mine was asking about 16" tire recommendations. One member suggested 17" swap. I asked about what would be needed to do it and this was a response I got
I am in the process of looking for a 17" rim for my bike.
96 should take any "F3" front wheel as a direct swap , you use your stock wheel spacers and rotors. And welcome to the world of unlimited tire options. 
I still have the factory tire on my 16" 900RR wheel.......sitting in the attic. I played that game for about 2 minutes back in the early/mid 90s and a 17" rim has been mod #1 on every bike since.
